Realism Project- Definition of Realism

Realism could be described as a style of writing in which details and ideas are probable and reasonable. Compared to the Romantic writing style in which grand stories of deep love, misery, and excessive emotions were used, Realism is, simply, just more "realistic" (Diamond). When thrown into dangerous or unfortunate situations, it would be common for the main character to describe how one might really feel in that particular conflict; he does not exclaim how God will save him or suddenly become some superhuman, which might actually happen in a story written in the Romanticism time period.
Although the Realism time period did occur soon after the Romanticism period and may have evolved from it, the views and writing styles are much different (Diamond). Realism, according to Marie Josephine Diamond, is "infused with concrete details and accurate descriptions of society, the characters of realist fiction are drawn from the events and contexts of modern life and face everyday obstacles." Basically, Realism really is just as its title states; it is realistic.
Instead of focusing solely on God or other spiritual or emotional beings, Realism tends to deal with real life things. One common subject in Realism is what is known as the "American Dream" (Diamond). Many authors wrote about the character's journey to find happiness and support for them and/or their family; success is a big part of this equation. Creating a home, a stable job, and a family to carry on the character's name seems to appear often in Realism stories. The government was also a common topic, as the government played a big part in standing in the way of the American Dream. It makes sense that these topics were written about so often, as these issues were most likely common in the author's world (Diamond).
Realism also includes "heroes" (Diamond). However, in the writings of Realism, heroes were not necessarily the muscular gods or exceptionally intelligent men that had been written about previously. Instead, these heroes were just common individuals who were placed in situations and tried to work their way out of them. Interestingly, these heroes did not necessarily always survive, proving that Realism is indeed realistic (Diamond).
Realism was a popular writing style that has evolved into many of the common forms of literature written today. The realistic, everyday nature of it set it apart from the works of Romanticism or any other writing styles of the day, providing readers entertainment they could relate to two hundred years ago and can still relate to today.

Personally, I love writing ACT argumentative essays! For those of you who know me, this may come as a surprise, but I must admit that I pretty much love to argue. Actually that was a joke, everybody who has ever spent more than ten minutes with me knows that I tend to argue quite a bit. Recently, I have had a certain friend tell me repeatedly that I am the best arguer he knows. He did not say it quite as positively as that, it was actually more along the lines of, "You argue more than anyone else I have ever met," but I prefer to take it as meaning that I am the best arguer. It is what I do when I am bored, and therefore I have perfected the skill.

When writing an argumentative essay for the ACT, it is first and foremost important to choose a side. If you are going to argue a point and actually sound confident and convincing, you cannot bounce back and forth between sides or have an inconclusive attitude. You must be totally confident and sure about your point of view, and you have to provide stellar support and background on why you chose that topic. Although I did mention to keep your opinion consistent, it is also necessary to include a counterargument. However, by showing the counterargument, you must make your point as to why you do not believe the counterargument is correct, legitimate, a good enough reason, etcetera.

It is important to write clearly and explain things thoroughly, using correct grammar the entire time. When the essay is being graded, no matter how strong the content is, bad grammar will automatically deduct your final grade. There are many things that will deduct the number of points you get, such as grammar obviously, not providing a counterargument, not sticking to an opinion, and things like that. The people who grade these are sticklers, although as long as you follow my tips you should not have to worry about that!

Springfield is such an incredibly boring city. Nothing ever happens in Springfield unless it is related to Abraham Lincoln, and, no offense, but he was cool like ten years ago. That is honestly all that happens; I one time was extremely bored and my friend Cara and I wanted to do something fun. I went onto my computer and Googled "Things to do in Springfield, Illinois," and a list of thirteen things popped up. Ten had to do with Abraham Lincoln, two had to do with the capitol, and one was a gas station. We literally have nothing to do; therefore, not much comes from Springfield.

Obviously, the horseshoe is from Springfield; that is the most obvious item. Our delicious single slice of bread topped with your choice of flavorful meat and covered in friends and a sauce is a delectable, healthy choice for your everyday dinner. Actually, it is very good tasting, but it is kind of overrated sometimes. D'Arcy's Pint has extremely good horseshoes though.

Some musical talent has come out of Springfield. Two bands that might be a little more well known are the Graduate and Park; they are kind of alternative bands that I think are very good. However, they are not extremely famous to the overall community. They are not completely unheard of, and since they originated in Springfield, I would consider them a pretty big deal.

Although, as I have previously mentioned, I do think all this Lincoln stuff is kind of dumb, his monuments and stuff definitely serve as an attraction for tourists. Sometimes when it is over a hundred degrees outside, I will be in my cool, air conditioned car downtown and see crazy tourists with cameras slung around their necks running to and fro between Lincoln's house and the new Lincoln monumental building. Frankly, I think it is just so dumb that someone would willingly vacation in Springfield, Illinois, but I guess some people just get a kick out of it.

Although it sounds dumb, Snowball was an experience that gave me emotional growth. Snowball, a drug and alcohol prevention retreat, takes place usually three times a year at schools such as Glenwood High School, Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, and Springfield Southeast High School. My first Snowball was in November of 2009, and it really opened my eyes to a lot of new opportunities. Although I usually do not open myself up to people emotionally, I found myself becoming comfortable with these people I had never met and telling them my story. It made me some incredibly good friends that allow me to just talk to them whenever I want, and they are some of the greatest people I have ever met in my life.

Recently, I went to SHG's snowball. It was the second Snowball at SHG that I had attended, and it was my fifth Snowball overall. Since I am extremely outgoing and not shy, I ended up being staff, which basically means that I was in charge of a group of kids and basically just led discussion. It was so much fun. Snowball is an extremely emotional experience, and while leading group discussion, I learned a lot of things about my peers. Some people in the group had experienced so many awful things that no one should ever have to go through. It made me look at my own life a little and realize how good I have it; I do not have the constant everyday struggles that some of the kids I talked to have to deal with every single day of their lives.

Snowball is also very self eye opening. There are activities such as Cross the Line, in which the codirectors are on one side of the gym and all of the participants and staff are lined up on the out of bounds line. The codirectors read of situations, such as "Cross the line if you have a happy home life." This is a very emotional experience for a lot of people; one learns things about themselves that they usually try to hide from everyone else. I know that personally it always kind of shocks me as I am finally honest with myself and I see the reactions of others. People always become closer through these kinds of experiences; some of my very very best friends have been made because of these experiences. Although it does sound kind of dumb, Snowball has definitely changed my life.

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Analysis

"An Occurrence At Owl Creek," written by Ambrose Bierce, is an interesting story that clearly depicts realism. This story presents factual information in a captivating way; it is not simply stating the facts, although those facts are very straightforward in their method of being presented. The way the story is told also represents realism. At the very beginning of the short story, as readers are informed that there is a man about to be hung, instead of informing the readers immediately about the presented situation or the emotions of the man being hung, readers are told of the details of the scenery (Bierce). The object from which he was about to be hung from was described, as was the surrounding objects. This is considered a factor of realism because it is not over exaggerating the situation or focusing solely on the emotions of the man; instead, it is simply giving observations of the scenery so that the reader knows it precisely. As opposed to other writings styles that deal greatly with the emotions of the main character, such as the Romanticism style of writing, realism does not deal with those factors quite as much. This is shown specifically in this short story. The thoughts and feelings of the main character really do not even come into play until the sixth paragraph or so, and for a short story this is a pretty substantial amount (Bierce). However, when the author does begin focusing on the emotions of him, they do become a part of the story. Again, though, they are not overdramatized and drawn out; they instead of more factual as to the emotions of one who actually is experiencing the situation. Another thing I noticed about the story that pertains to realism is that there are not really mentions of God. It may not be necessarily because God does not exist to them; instead I believe it is just because He is not a central focus in their lives. In writings styles such as those of the Puritans, God is all that they know, and their writings focus strongly on their beliefs. Realists, however, see things the way they are presented; they see the more factual side of the picture. God not being mentioned shows that even if He is present in their lives, it is not an important factor. Yet another factor in the story that relates to realism is the psychological aspect. In the time period in which realism began, scientist were becoming more knowledgeable, and psychological breakthroughs were occurring. The story ends with an interesting twist in which it seems that the entire events were just imagined; this analysis of the human mind is definitely a characteristic of realism.

Abby Werlock describes the ending of the story in a very interesting way. She says that the twist, when readers find out that he imagined the whole situation in which he saves himself, is actually a very common reality (Werlock). I definitely have to agree with her. I think that when people are in stressful situations, they imagine a perfect plan that ends with an ideal outcome. I think we do this to protect ourselves; we cannot handle the situation on our hands, so we imagine a better one in which we can actually control the outcome. When reading the analysis by Werlock, I really identified with it and it made a lot of sense that Fahrquhar, having no other hope, just imagined a situation that momentarily satisfied him and took his mind away from the true situation at hand.

Thumbalina was in a tight spot. She had quite a serious problem, a bad situation if you will. Thumbalina was supposed to give a speech to her Honors English class, and she had been planning on writing it the night before. However, that did not actually work out; she got a little too caught up in facebook and ended up just not doing her work. So there she was, sitting in Physics, trying to figure out what to do. She needed to come up with some kind of creative speech, but she had no idea what to do! It had to be fifteen minutes long, and she was really just freaking out. Defeated, she laid her head down on her desk. It really did not matter that she was not paying attention in Physics; no one ever knows what is going on in that class anyway.

As she closed her eyes, the voice of the Physics teacher began to drift away, and a vision of sugar plum fairies instead granted her vision. Fairies danced around sugary plantation looking things, while strange little men with striped colorful canes hopped to and fro throughout a forest. Mystical, beautiful creatures roared in the pink and orange sunset. It was really quite odd because it was like seeing many different settings at one time; all Thumbalina had to do was turn her head. It was magical and mystical and captivating. It was almost like a mix between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice and Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and Katy Perry's music video for "California Gurls." It was wonderful! As Thumbalina ran around the bright and colorful forest in delight, she met many interesting creatures and made new friends. It was the most amazing experience of her life.

"Thumbalina!" Thumbalina shot her head straight up from her desk. "Would you care to tell us the answer?" Thumbalina skeptically looked at her notes, where the only indication of her being in class whatsoever that day was the date in the upper right hand corner and a small smudge of drool. "Uh, no thanks," Thumbalina said tentatively. She felt a tad bit stupid; everyone was laughing at her. Then, all of a sudden, she had an epiphany. Maybe she had just looked like a fool in Physics, but she now had her story for English!

I do not think that Pleasant Plains should have to wear school uniforms. School uniforms are unattractive, unnecessary, and might not make some people feel good about their bodies. Honestly, the main reason I would not want to wear a uniform is because I find them to be boring, ugly, and one cannot express their individuality. I believe that a big part of high school is learning how to express oneself, and if all of the students are forced to wear the same boring outfit every single day, there is really not much individuality going on. A lot of athletic people like to wear their shirts and outfits that express their accomplishments and sports that they participate in; I as well as many others take pride in that. Students also enjoy wearing clothes that express their opinions through what they wear; they might wear shirts that express their favorite bands. If students were not allowed to wear uniforms, our individuality would be stomped upon. I also think kids would start to act out a little bit to prove that they were "tough," since they were not allowed to wear "bad kid" clothes or anything.

Another reason I think it would not be good to wear uniforms is because students would not be able to wear clothes that fit their comfort, or the uniforms might not fit correctly. I know that a lot of private schools that wear uniforms require their students to wear a skirt and a polo. However, what if the student is very uncomfortable with their legs? What if the student is shaped oddly and skirts accentuate the traits that they would otherwise try to hide? Also, I do not think that polos are flattering whatsoever unless a girl is shaped perfectly for it. For example, I hate polos because I am short and they look very awkward on me. Therefore, people who argue that students should wear uniforms because they ruin the self-confidence issues for high school students are mistaken in my opinion. Yes, it does eliminate the fact that kids do not have to spend money on trendy clothes trying to fit in, but I think that the students would feel even more uncomfortable and self-conscious wearing school uniforms. I do not think that students at Pleasant Plains should wear uniforms.

Taylor Swift's new album, "Speak Now," is an album every person should have. Yes, even the boys should listen to the third album by the super hot sensation TSwizzle. The extended album, sold only at Target, is even better and contains three extra tracks and two acoustic versions. While it sounds completely generic and cliche for a sixteen year old girl to be in love with Taylor Swift, I truly believe my affection is justified. Taylor Swift has written every single one of her songs ever sense her debut album; therefore, she is not just some pretty face jamming along to words she does not even believe. She truly can exhibit emotion in her songs because all of the situations she sings about have personally influenced her and affected her. Her lyrics are not cheezy little second grade rhymes either; her lyrics are actually extremely complex and thought through. For example, in her new single "Back to December," Taylor sings, "So this is me swallowing my pride standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night, and I go back to December all the time. It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you, wishing I'd realized what I had when you were mine. I'd go back to December turn around and make it all right. I'd go back to December all the time."

As one might be able to see, these lyrics are not little kid rhymes; they are complex, thought through, and they actually give off emotion. I think this is incredibly important in a song. Many people say that she does not have a good voice; however, I have personally seen her three times in concert and she is not a bad singer. How do you think a seventeen year old would feel going up onstage in front of hundreds of the people they have looked up to for years and trying to sing perfectly? That is what she was doing for the first couple years of her career, and personally I know that even if I was the best singer in the world, I would sound terrible. In truth, she is not a bad singer at all, and in her newest album "Speak Now" her voice sounds even more mature and has an even greater range. The album is an impressive piece of work that I think everyone should check out; one might learn a little something.

On Black Friday, I took my little brothers shopping. We woke up at three o'clock in the morning. It took a lot of effort for me to get up Johnny, my youngest brother, because he is a heavy sleeper and is kind of stubborn when he is tired. I convinced them to get going by bribing them with McDonald's. I got my way; they got up and dressed pretty fast, and we headed out. When we arrived at McDonald's, it was so packed. There were people everywhere. It was hard just to get into the parking lot! We stood around for a while and finally ordered. After we ordered, it took another twenty minutes to get the food and drinks. I did not exactly get my way then, but it was not a huge deal because I work in fast food so I know how it can be, and I know better than to complain.

After we got our food and drinks, we headed to the Wal-Mart parking lot. To our dismay and surprise, people were already heading into the store! We had been ready for a camp out, and needless to say we were disappointed. We went inside and it was just lame, so we headed to Target. Unfortunately, Target had opened even earlier, so it was even more crowded. We picked out some items, then got in line. As we stood there in the line that was wrapped through the lanes and around the entire building all the way to the entrance, I realized that I really did not want to be standing there. I looked over to my brothers and said, "Hey guys, I am going to go try on some clothes, so hold our spot in line." They complained and argued, but I am obviously the best arguer around, so they lost. They ended up standing in line for at least a half and hour. Then we got bored, hid our stuff under a pile of clothes so we could go back and get it later, and we left. I was very happy that I got my way and did not waste a half hour of my life standing in that ridiculous line.

Persistence is a very important trait to display. When one is persistent, they never give up, and they keep on enduring something even though it may be difficult or challenging. I think I display persistence; I run cross country so I kind of have to persist throughout the race. Three miles is kind of hard to race, so this trait allows me to finish the race without stopping.

I really do not like the word "persistence." The "e" at the end gets me every time; I always try to put an "a" there and it is very frustrating when the little red squiggly line appears under the word. It makes me want to scream and shake my computer until the little red squiggly line goes away. Unfortunately, since I am in a school environment, I cannot sufficiently do this, as it could be considered destruction of property and I could probably get in quite a load of trouble. Instead, to calm my nerves, I will just find more pictures of Ryan Reynolds without a shirt on and put it as the background of my computer; that makes me laugh and instantly calms my nerves as I begin to forget about the stupid little red squiggly line and the word persistence.

Over Christmas break, I used persistence when I was watching Criminal Minds. That, by the way, is easily the best television show ever created by man. Throughout break, my brother, my father, and I watched two entire seasons of the show. Although that was not a difficult form of persistence, it certainly was persistence. I endured through many exciting and fascinating hours of the show in order to learn more about these people's lives and ideas. Doctor Spencer Reid is my favorite character. Matthew Gray Gubler, the actor who plays him, is a sweetheart and I absolutely adore him. He is currently the background of my home computer, and that is by choice, not because the word persistence was annoying me. Anyway, persistence is not always difficult. It is just enduring through activities in order to reach a goal.
